Water shaped heart
I love photographing water. Technically it’s not hard to do and even with basic equipment the results can be amazing but water is a challenging subject if you want consistency. Every drip, splash or droplet of water will be a little different to the last and that element of slight unpredictability is what makes every water photo unique.
In this tutorial I make use of the uniqueness of a water splash by throwing some in the air and freezing it with a burst of flash. Repeating the action produces more splashes of a similar, yet different shape and then it’s into Photoshop to make this amazingly beautiful water heart.

Hi Gavin, I’m curious to know more about the law that you mention about it being illegal to waste wine for photography shots. Or were you joking? I can’t find a reference to it on the net.

Apart from catching the water (not a lot, though!) do the black troughs play any part in capturing the images?
Err no not really but the idea of limiting the mess was solid 🙂

Sorry for my earlier badly worded question.
What I was trying to find out was if the trough helps to accentuate the edge definintion seen on the stem of the glass, ie, the black line.

Great tutorial. Tried this out but failed miserably at getting the shape to look like yours. I used a cable to fire my flash so I did not have any on camera flash, this resulted in the glasses having some dark almost black areas. Does your on camera flash add to the exposure?
