Lovingly Made Photo Challenge
It’s been a while since undertaking my last 15 minute photo challenge so for all of you who have been asking when they’ll return I’ve got some happy news.
My latest 15 minute challenge is now out and with any luck it won’t be the last. This challenge was recorded at Lovingly Made which is a vintage home and garden store located just outside East Grinstead in Sussex. They were kind enough to invite me along to photograph anything that took my eye and there was no shortage of great photos to be had.

As you can see from the video much of my time was spent in the store finding the smaller scenes to photograph. Fortunately I’d packed my flash and the Westcott Pocket Box which I’m in the process of reviewing. This proved to be invaluable for controlling the light.

Nice video Gavin. Only found your stuff recently and I’ve been checking out the 15 minute challenges. Full of useful ideas. Some of them though – like this one – are probably harder for a hobbyist amateur to repeat due to access restrictions I’d think.

Thanks Gavin – As a result of this video I acquired one of the Westcott mods and had good luck with it just shooting everyday items around the house. Thanks for the inspiration – this opened up a whole new way to capture images for me – can’t wait to take it outside, too.

This latest video is great, but I only have a 50D plus 430EXII which doesn’t fire remotely as you show. So the question is will this technique only work with a 580EXII? – or would I need an up to date camera as well?
Also how does the ETTL work on the remote 580EXII? Is the remote flash stopped by the on-camera flash which in effect is monitoring the exposure and is stopped by the camera when the exposure is OK? Or is there some kind of wireless or optical communication between the 580EXII and the 60D (or 50D)?
Hi Roy
It’s your camera that needs to change not your flash. The pop up flash on the 7D, 60D, 600D and 650D can all act as a master in the way I did here. Alternatively you can by a infrared trigger such as this one https://www.gavtrain.com/?p=758 or any number of radio triggers (although you’ll loose eTTL connection with radio triggers). Your flash can act as a slave, so no need to update that unless you need the extra power of the 580EXii.

I’ll consider the YN ST-E2 and take into account the focussing beams.
I suppose the only difference would then be that there would not be any direct light from the cameras pop up flash (unless the YN can be used somehow off shoe?), but would this make any difference to the technique and shots you demonstrated in the video?
