Ambient vs Flash for location portraits
When it comes to shooting portraits on location I know many photographers who love to make best use of the ambient light. I also know lots of photographers who wouldn’t dream of shooting on location without flash. Although I prefer flash, I’m very happy to work with ambient light if it does what I need. If you’re undecided about moving to flash or perfecting your ambient shooting techniques then this video should answer a few questions.
I must thank the Gatwick Aviation Museum for the use of their location and the loan of the pilots outfit. Part of the reason for the look and location in these shots was to test out the venue and one of the outfits for my big Aviation Apocalypse workshop. Judging by what we learned on this shoot, the workshops are shaping up to be very exciting!

Great video Gavin, could I just ask you…..the shot taken outside with flash that was f16… 1/320, was that taken with HSS? Thank you
Olympus cameras have a maximum flash sync speed of 1/320th 🙂

do you have any videos that explain stops etc.. I just trying to get my head around Stops i know this is most probably a basic question but I thought id ask anyway. It might be in the fearless flash series I just brought today.
one last thing I was wondering if you could share the location where you shot the little red riding hood theme ?

Do olympus camera use nikon flash? I have a Nikon D600 with sb 900 and I want to buy a olympus camera.
I’ve not tried it but I would expect the Nikon flash will fit Olympus OMD bodies but you’ll only get to use manual mode. The Nikon CLS system won’t work, so off camera flash is best done with a radio trigger/receiver. No TTL or HSS of course, you’d need a Olympus flash to do that.

If I want to get dark skies like you did in this photo shoot, by underexposing the back ground could I use the TTL version of the Flashpoint Streak light 360 or would it be best to use the manual version.
